Take the plunge!

The humble plunger will produce a great cup of coffee and is easier to master than the espresso machine. Of course to meet personal taste preference, weak, strong or somewhere in between, you will have to play around until you get it just right for you.

These tips are a positive starting point,

  • Use filtered water whenever possible as poor tasting water will affect your brew. Make sure your plunger has been cleaned since it was last used as coffee oils build up quickly and adversely affect your flavour.
  • Remove plunger lid and sieve.
  • Preheat your plunger pot by filling with hot water.
  • Empty, then measure 7grams (about 1-2 rounded tablespoons) of freshly ground coffee per average cup, into the plunger pot.
  • Fill with hot water just off the boil. Water which is too hot scalds the coffee and destroys flavour.
  • Stir then place the plunger lid and sieve on top and wait 2-3 minutes before slowly pressing plunger to the bottom.
  • If too strong it’s best to add water to your cup rather than reduce the amount of coffee in the plunger.

It’s important to grind your roasted beans on demand which can be done with a small and inexpensive electric grinder. Check to make sure your particles are ground evenly by shaking the grinder if needed during the grinding process.
